reddit, the front page of the Internet

reddit, the front page of the Internet

Did you know that “reddit” is the Latin word for render, which can mean “to submit for consideration or approval.” That basically sums up the concept of this popular social platform.  As well as being a play on words, “I read it on reddit”, reddit is a source for what’s hot on the web. Users provide all the content and decide, through voting, what’s good and what’s junk. Links that are approved by the reddit community rise up towards the top, ensuring the front page is constantly filled with fresh, juicy content.

reddit might be that website you’ve heard of but aren’t too sure how it works. Is it a social network? A message board? Its basic design layout kind of resembles that of a chat forum, you know even before ICQ. Don’t let its simple interface fool you though; reddit is one of the most-visited sites on the Internet with billions of page views each month.

It’s pretty clear that reddit is always hot due to the power of the user collective. But what’s especially hot right now are AMAs (more Internet slang!). An AMA stands for “ask me anything”. It is when a reddit user initiates an online conversation with other users where he or she will answer any question for a period of about an hour. The concept is popular among high- profile people and celebrities like Bill Murray. Check out some upcoming AMAs here.

But it’s not just celebrities seeing success from these candid online conversations. Brands have also started using this platform for marketing efforts. Take these brands for example:

Another tool within the reddit community is the subreddit. A subreddit is a custom-made subforum created by people or brands around a specific topic. And as you can imagine, there’s a subreddit for pretty much anything. Starbucks and Coca-Cola have subreddits where images, videos, links and personal stories related to the brands are shared. This provides an opportunity for customers to share information within a community controlled by the brand.

reddit is a great example of a site that has become far more than simply a social-networking or link-sharing platform. It has grown into a real online community with multifaceted usage.

Are you an avid reddit user? Have you used reddit for your own marketing efforts?
