Scary Facts about Distracted Driving
Many may think that teens are the usual suspects for not paying attention behind the wheel, but a recent study by Allstate Canada and Abacus Data, found that Gen X (born 1965 – 1980) are the most likely to admit to most distracted driving behaviours. In fact, distracted drivers are just as impaired as drunk drivers, and it has been found that:
- 90% of Canadians admit to distracted driving
- 8 out of 10 collisions are caused by distracted drivers
- Texting makes you 23 times more likely to crash
- Driving while distracted is like driving after four beers
Despite legislation, Canadians are still driving distracted. Research by Allstate Canada has also found that although 94% of drivers are aware of current distracted driving penalties, only 7% say this would prevent them from driving distracted.
Put Down the Phone and Just Drive
Allstate Canada has been asking Canadians to take Action Against Distraction since 2010. Last year, in a partnership with MuchMusic VJ – Phoebe Dykstra, teens across the country were asked to submit their multimedia solutions to distracted driving. The contest will return again this Fall, to give an opportunity to teens to speak out about the dangers of distracted driving.
